According to Fox News the DOE is planning to bury the U-233 in Nevada. They sound kind of alarmed about this, but I view this a a good thing, because it won't be downblended and we can dig it up some day.

DOE made the decision to reduce U-233 downblending in July, 2012. About half of the material is in a more or less vitrified state and will be buried. The other half is still scheduled to be downblended. I don't know how much of the U-233, if any, will be recoverable for reuse.

This is the DOE press release about the plan. The project team won a DOE Environmental Management Achievement Award.

The Fox News report is a joke. It says,

Quote:
Alvarez, who worked at the DOE and also served for five years as a senior investigator for what is now the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, is widely regarded as an expert on the country’s nuclear weapons program.

That's the same Robert Alvarez who wrote "Why Fukushima Is a Greater Disaster than Chernobyl" and who, according to Rod Adams, has no academic training or practical experience with nuclear reactors or waste disposal. Fox News will happily call Alvarez a widely regarded expert if he's criticizing nukes and the Obama administration, but if Alvarez calls for billions of dollars of new federal spending on renewable energy, Fox News would flip around and call him an Agenda 21 extremist.

It's the same Alvarez whose own daughter busted him and his wife for growing pot in their basement.

U-233 in the US and RG plutonium in the UK. If they cannot use it, it should best be sold to India or China who have plans for it. Russia has enough fissile material of its own.

The Takoma Park couple whose teenage daughter turned them in to police for growing marijuana in the basement each will plead guilty to a single misdemeanor, according to a plea deal outlined in court records.

The agreement, which is scheduled to be reviewed in court next month, would mean probation and no jail time for Robert Jason Alvarez, 54, and his wife, Katherine Marie "Kitty" Tucker, 55.

But a number of issues remain unresolved for Alvarez, who lost a senior policy job at the U.S. Department of Energy over his August arrest, and Tucker, a nationally known anti-nuclear activist whose attorneys say she used the marijuana for medical purposes.

The family is fighting …

U-233 is an important issue irrespective of Alvarez family fights.
Hundreds of kg of an important isotope prepared in reactors, useful for energy research is proposed to be wasted. It is a much bigger scandal than growing a plant found wild in India and other countries. U-233 is the best fissile material for reactors in some ways and scope for its multiplication for use as a fissile feed in reactors is very important. After it has been given up in the US, India is building its first prototype fast reactor to produce it in the thorium blanket. India is also running the world's smallest reactor (KAMINI) using U-233 as fuel.

I believe the shipping port reactor fuel will be shipped to Nevada if its not already there. Could India use this fuel? I imagine it has a pretty strong gamma field by now.
