On another blog, a fellow made note of the Liquid Metal Fuel Reactors (LMFR). Like the LFTR, it appears to be an idea buried within past research. Here's a link to a few pages from an old text:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=10&ved=0CIABEBYwCQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmoltensalt.org%2Freferences%2Fstatic%2Fdownloads%2Fpdf%2FFFR_chap18.pdf&ei=oW75UtfDNejayAGE3oCwAw&usg=AFQjCNHyjUZMXbalCDBj_l2zoPRHy3yHug&sig2=QXfGh9VKC3f607ZoOXAW9w&bvm=bv.60983673,d.dmQ

I figure the people on this site are probably very aware of the liquid Bismuth reactor. So, I'm a bit curious:

What's wrong with it?

Does it offer many of the same advantages as LFTR?

There was mention of linear induction pumps being useful for liquid metal reactors. These would certainly seem to be an advantage as they would have fewer (to no) moving parts. The high temperature pump appears to be a major road block for the LFTR.

It was also said capable of using Uranium 233 and I presume, Thorium.

Does it have similar burnup?
Are the waste products similar?
Would it require as extensive chemical processing?
Does it offer the same nuclear proliferation advantages?

Will it operate at a lower temperature and stress components less?

can you use the same safety features, i.e low pressure and the freeze plug?

Is Bismuth less expensive than FLiBe?

Maybe, there's already a discussion of this on this site. Is there?

This thing has got me interested, but I don't know enough about reactors to determine whether this is just more vapor. :P
